a-n Members' Combined Liability Insurance

All UK based a-n Artists and a-n Arts Organiser members benefit from a Combined Liability Insurance comprising of £10m Public and Products Liability (PPL) and £5m Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance arranged by Hencilla.

The a-n members insurance policy has been specifically designed for visual and applied artists and freelance visual arts professionals and provides cover whilst the member is undertaking any of the following in connection with their visual or applied arts practice

Cover as an Artist for

  • the making, developing, designing, creating, preparing, installing, selecting, exhibiting, presenting, display and sale of any works of visual or applied art
  • the lecturing, teaching or demonstrating of visual or applied art including (but not limited to) workshops, residencies and community projects

Cover as a Visual Arts Professional for

  • the directing, curating, commissioning, managing, coordinating, producing, organising, acting as agent for, consulting on, or assisting with the creation and presentation of visual or applied arts or cultural activities.

    Visual Arts Professional includes work within public and community art, arts education and interpretation, galleries and exhibitions, heritage and museums, festivals and events, studios and workshops, digital developments, professional development and training (including mentoring and coaching), work as an art handler or art technician, public relations, marketing and audience development, fundraising, and sponsorship

    Visual Arts Professional does not include work
  • as a producer, director or technician within any commercial film, television, radio, circus or theatre production or like media
  • within commercial music production or the organisation or promotion of music concerts, music festivals and the like
  • as a performer in the performing arts
  • as a teacher, instructor or coordinator of any circus skills, dance or other movement based performing arts, stunts, stage combat or the use of edged weapons, use of firearms, use of pyrotechnics or special effects, fire performance, aerial performance, stage hypnotism
  • as an animal handler or supplier,

The policy deems 'Visual or Applied Art' to include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital, design, moving image, time-based media, sculpture, ceramics, community arts, glassmaking, textiles, jewellery, mixed media, interactive arts, crafts, live art and physical performance. This is not a definitive list so please contact us if you have any questions about whether this cover is suitable for your practice.

What is Public Liability Insurance?

Public Liability insurance protects the a-n member from legal claims for compensation from other people or organisations where there is an allegation that, in the course of their visual arts practice, the member has caused or contributed to an accident which results in injury or damage to property.

What is Products Liability Insurance?

Products Liability insurance protects the a-n member from legal claims for compensation for accidents caused by their supply of any Product, where the accident has resulted in injury to any person or damage to someone else's property.

For the purposes of the members insurance, a Product includes any work of art or craftwork that has been made, supplied, installed, altered or repaired by the member.

Products Liability Insurance does not provide any cover for damage to the artwork itself - if you require this cover then we can be provide this for an additional cost via the Artists Insurance Policy.

What is Professional Indemnity Insurance?

Professional Indemnity insurance protects the a-n member from legal claims for compensation as a result of a negligent breach of professional duty in the undertaking of their work as an artist. Examples would include defective designs/specifications or allegations of intellectual property infringements.
